797,923. Seed sowing machines. MASSEY-HARRIS-FERGUSON, Inc. Nov. 26, 1954 [Nov. 27, 1953], No. 34282/54. Class 6(1). A seed sowing machine adapted to be hitched to a tractor so as to be carried bodily thereby is provided with a ground-wheel drive for driving seed dispensing apparatus and compresses a transverse sleeve 91 rigidly supported by a tool-bar 30, a drive shaft journalled in the sleeve and coupled to the seed dispenser of planting units 74, a vertically swingable frame 88 pivoted on the sleeve and provided with spring means 96 between the frame and tool-bar for urging the frame downwardly and a groundwheel 85 journalled in the frame and connected to the shaft by chain and sprocket gearing 115. As shown the tool bar 30 is provided with pins 32, 39 for the attachment of the links of a tractor hydraulic power lift incorporating automatic draft control mechanism. Each planting unit 40 is attached to a beam 42, the beam 42 also carrying a furrow-forming tool 47 and the tube 128 of a fertilizer attachment 124. Bracket plates 52 are fixed in each beam 42 and carry a furrow-opener 55 and a seed tube 81. Upper bracket plates 56 are mounted on each beam and carry rearwardly extending bars 58 which support a cross-bar 59 on which are mounted furrow closers 62. Trailing from each planting unit is a press-wheel 64 provided with a scraper 70 and mounted on a spring urged beam pivotally connected to the bracket plates 56. The seed dispenser of each unit comprises a plate rotating on a vertical axis and arranged to drop seed down the tube 81. Coupling devices 106 are provided for the drive to the seed dispensers so that the planting units may be adjusted transversely.
