Abstract
796,915. Aerials; radio direction finding. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Sept. 3, 1956 [Sept. 21, 1955], No. 26862/56. Class 40 (7). An aerial system for a gun-control &c. followup radar system and which provides a single axial primary lobe when transmitting and, symmetrically around the latter, four separate directional primary lobes intersecting one another when receiving, comprises four adjacent horns or waveguides 1, 2, 3, 4, provided respectively with resonant apertures 5, 6, 7, 8, the phase centres of which are closer together than the geometrical centres of the guides and the whole assembly is terminated by four convergent metal plates 11, 12, 13, 14, forming a truncated pyramidal hood, the smaller open end of which is supported at the focus of a paraboloid mirror 15, preferably as shown in Fig. 5, by employing the waveguides themselves as supporting means. The effect of the hood on the impedance matching of the apertures is corrected by means of diaphragms (not shown) in the guides and parasitic couplings between the guides are eliminated by means of quarter-wave trap filters one of which is shown at 9 (Fig. 6). With this arrangement the level at which the receiving lobes intersect is about 3 db. below the level corresponding to the maximum. In operation it is required that during transmission the four waveguides be energized simultaneously in phase and, during reception, that the four waveguides feed the receiving equipment independently. This is achieved by the arrangement shown in Fig. 7 in which the transmitter (magnetron &c.) 9 feeds, via a unidirectional coupler K, a network comprising four " magic T " hybrids T5, T6, T7, T8, the first three of which, during transmission, each operate to divide its input signal into two equal parts so that each of the waveguide elements 1, 2, 3, 4 receives a quarter of the energy, this being caused to be in the same phase at each element by arranging the overall electrical lengths of the supply guides between the transmitter and the elements to be equal to each other. During reception the energy received by each element 1, 2, 3, 4 and denoted in Fig. 7, by 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>, respectively, is combined as indicated, by means of the " magic T's " (T5, T6, T7, T8) and supplied, via coupler K and lead 16 to a normal radar receiver, via T-R cell R13 to a receiver from which the elevation error is derived and, via T-R cell R14 to a further receiver from which the azimuth error is derived. The difference signal (1<SP>1</SP>+4<SP>1</SP>) - (2<SP>1</SP>+3<SP>1</SP>) derived from cell T8 is not used and is absorbed in a matching load 17.
