Abstract

Sulphur dioxide is extracted from a gas mixture, preferably a dried mixture of SO2 and chlorine, with anhydrous chloro-sulphonic acid and degasefying the acid solutions, which usually contains 40-50 per cent of SO2, under conditions which permit direct condensation of the SO2 by cooling, e.g. to 2-3 DEG C. The gas may contain some solvent which can, however, be removed with concentrated sulphuric acid. The process may be contacted in a liquid bubbler or pebble-packed apparatus and in such a manner that the degasefication of the acid solution takes place in a tower the temperature at the bottom of which is sufficient to liberate the dissolved SO2.
