Abstract
796,654. Luminescent materials. COLE, Ltd., E. K., and EVANS, J. N. I. July 6, 1956 [July 8, 1955], No. 19750/55. Class 39(1). A method of producing thallium-activated sodium iodide crystals comprises dissolving iodine in a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium iodide, dissolving therein some thallous iodide, subjecting the solution to conditions which promote crystallization and removing the excess iodine. The final solution can be evaporated to promote crystallization or can be saturated at a temperature near its boiling point and cooled to a temperature near and above that at which crystals of hydrated sodium iodide would be deposited. The evaporation or cooling can take place in the vicinity of a seed crystal. To remove the excess iodine the product is heated at about 150‹C. until it becomes almost white. The product can be excited by gamma, beta and X-rays and has a peak emission at about 4100Š and a decay time of less than 1 microsecond. The product can be ground in the absence of moisture, after heating to 150‹C., to pass a 300 mesh sieve and then pressed in a mould of stainless steel in a lowpressure chamber. The mould can be previously heated to about 1000‹C.
