Abstract
<PICT:0796578/III/1> Copper sulphate is prepared by dissolving granulated copper in hot dilute sulphuric acid in the presence of air by passing the acid and air continuously upwards through a heap of copper granules in the reaction vessel, and withdrawing the sulphate solution and sludge of impurities from above the heap of granules. The air is advantageously introduced at such a pressure that it fills the entire cross-section of the reaction vessel and causes the granules to grind against one another, which results in the surface being constantly freed of sludge and so exposed to the action of the acid and air. In the preferred form of the apparatus the granules f are on a grid c, and acid is admitted at 6, and air at d. The solution and sludge are withdrawn at h.
