Abstract

796,452. Finishing fabrics. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 29,1956 [June 16, 1955], No. 9831/56. Class 42 (1). A fabric formed of interlaced yarns made predominantly of asbestos fibres is treated by wetting the fabric, brushing it while wet and before it is otherwise treated, and thereafter drying it, whereby short lengths of asbestos fibre are deposited in the spaces between the yarns to give the fabric enhanced lustre and the appearance of a finer weave. As shown, a fabric F is passed through an aqueous bath W and is brushed on both sides by brushes 15, 16, a small roll B of wet fibres accumulating ahead of each brush. The fabric is then dried in a tenter 18, calendered by rolls 20, 21, and wound in a roll 19. Bath W may contain a small amount of binder such as starch or resin, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, Preferably, brushes 15, 16 have long soft bristles, e.g. of nylon; alternatively flexible vanes, e.g. of rubber, extending the width of the fabric and fixed to rotating cylinders may be used.
