796,369. Treating steels and steel alloys. BOCHUMER VEREIN FUR GUSSSTAHLFABRIKATION AKT.-GES. Dec. 16, 1955 [Dec. 17, 1954; Dec. 17, 1954], No. 36205/55 Classes 72 and 82(1) A method of introducing refining agents or alloying constituents into steel or steel alloys is characterized in that the molten steel or alloy is introduced into an evacuated space and falls freely through that space, preferably in a stream of fine droplets, and the materials to be added are brought into contact with the flowing stream. As shown in the Figure vessel 1 is connected to vacuum pumps through a conduit 5 and is sealed by a lid 3 having an orifice 12 which is surmounted by a pouring ladle 9 which is itself sealed to the lid. Molten metal falls into the evacuated vessel 1 under control of an adjustable outlet 10. The treating material, which may be a gas, is introduced into the vessel 1 in the region of the flowing stream through a duct 8. Finely divided solid treating material may be introduced by being carried by an inert gas stream from a container 16 which opens into the duct 8. Alternatively the treating gas and solid or liquid material may be introduced through separate inlets into the flowing stream of metal. The Specification refers to the addition of titanium, aluminium, boron, niobium, tantalum'or vanadium or their alloys or compounds into molten steel. Specification 792,160 is referred to.
