Abstract
796,119. Winding webs. BLACK-CLAWSON CO. May 18, 1956 [May 19, 1955], No. 15615/56. Class 100(1) A web winding machine comprises a base frame 10, a driving drum 11, primary arms 20 for receiving a new core 22 during the commencement of winding a web thereon, secondary arms 30 for receiving successive cores from the primary arms 20 with the web wound partly thereon and supporting each core during the winding of a full roll thereon, means for moving the secondary arms to retract the full roll out of engagement with drum 11, a guide roller 70 mounted on the frame 10 for movement between the drum and full roll to deflect upwardly the portion of web there between, a knife 72 movable with the guide roller 70 to an advanced position spaced between the guide roller 70 and a new core in the primary arms to sever the web therebetween, and means co-operating with the primary arms to bring the new core therein into driven contact with the drum to accelerate the new core to web speed and thereby cause the severed leading end to commence winding. The drum 11 is driven continuously through a shaft 16 by a shaft 15. The arms 20 which include forked ends 19 for receiving each core 22 are actuated by segments 23 engaging pinions 24 on a shaft 25 rotated by a hand wheel 26. Each arm 20 carries a pivoted finger 27 held depressed by a small air cylinder 28 to obtain initial pressure engagement of the core against the drum. The arms 30 are freely mounted on a shaft 31 and are adjustable thereto by crank arms 33 secured to the shaft 31 which engage bolts 35 threaded through ears 34 on the arms 30. The arms. 30 are movable, between the inclined broken line position and the erect position shown in full lines in which a full roll 40 is out of contact with the drum 11, by a fluid pressure cylinder 44 having a piston rod, not shown, connected to an arm 45 secured to the shaft 31. The full roll 40 is driven through a shaft 51, pulley 52, belts 53 and a pulley 54. The pulley 54 is driven through a pneumatically actuated clutch 55 on the shaft 15. The shaft 51 drives a shaft 29 supporting the cores 22 through a second pneumatically actuated clutch 57. The guide roller 70 is carried by arms 60, while the knife 72 is carried by collars 73 rotatably mounted at the ends of the roller, each collar having an arm 75 connected to an air cylinder 77 for actuating the knife in the counterclockwise direction. A pressure roller 80, carried by arms 81, is actuated towards the drum 11 by piston rods engaging a pair of air cylinders 85. In operation, when roll 40 is almost complete the arms 30 are brought into a vertical position by the cylinders 44, the clutches 55 and 57 being engaged to continue the winding. The arms 45 actuate a valve 89 to cause cylinder 61 to rotate the arms 60 counterclockwise into advanced position. The arms 20 are brought into vertical position, such that the web 88 contacts the drum 11 and partially envelopes an empty core 22 in the arms 20. The knife 72 is then actuated by the cylinder 77 to sever the web 88. The leading end of the web, formed by severing, then commences winding on the core 22 which may be coated with adhesive to facilitate this. The full roll is removed from the arms 30, whereupon they are returned to their inclined position to receive the partially wound roll from the arms 20. The knife blade 72 may be electically heated for use with synthetic plastic films.
