Abstract

An eta-carbide, or other iron-containing carbide, or iron-containing intermetallic compound, is bonded to a metal base by applying a thickness thereof to the base and heating to a temperature of 1100 DEG -1400 DEG C. in a non oxidizing atmosphere (including in vacuo) to effect sintering of the carbide &c. and bonding of it to the base. The eta-carbide may be the double carbide of Fe and W or Fe and Mo, the other carbides may be (Cr, Fe, W, Mo)23 C6, (Cr. Fe, W, Mo)7 C3 or (Fe, Cr)3 C, and the intermetallic compound may be Fe3 W2 or Fe3Nb2. There may be incorporated with the carbide &c., a binder such as Co, Ni, Fe or stainless steel, and a high melting carbide such as Wc, W2C, T1C, TaC, NbC, and V4C3. The carbide &c. may be applied as powder, as a paste, as a suspension in liquid, by spraying from a pistol, as a presintered, for example to 1000 DEG C. Pressure may be applied simultaneously with the heat, e.g. 50 t.s.i. The base may be of steel Mo, Cr, Ti, Co and Ni; the layer of carbide &c. may be impregnated with oils, greases, graphite, MoS2, plastics or Cu. Many applications are disclosed. Specification 668,847 [Group XXII] is referred to.
