795,240. Copy-turning. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.- GES. Dec. 8, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35516/54. Class 83 (3). A copying - lathe, e.g. for pistons, comprises a tool 24 in a holder 16 slidable towards and away from the work-axis 11 by feelers 6, 13, 19 acting through a frame 17 pivoted to an arm 17a on the holder. Feeler 6 is pivoted on trunnions 6a and is urged to engage the periphery of a cam 8, rotating with the work, by a spring 9. An arcuate surface 5 passing through the trunnion centres is engaged by the nose 12 of feeler 13, which is pivoted at 18 to the frame and engages a template 15 with an arcuate surface 14 corresponding to surface 5. Feeler 19 is integral with the frame 17 and is urged by spring 20 to engage a template 21. Template 15 controls the longitudinal shape of the work, e.g. conical, by causing feeler 13 to pivot about its nose 12 and so move frame 17 and the tool. Cam 8 has a shape corresponding to the cross-section of the work, e.g. oval, but has no effect on frame 17 if nose 12 lies on the trunnion axis. The movement of the nose relatively to this axis is controlled by a template 21 and feeler 19, whereby the cross-section can be varied along the length of the work. Thus, if template 21 is flat and parallel to the work-axis, the work will be circular at any cross-section, and if template 15 is also flat and parallel to the work-axis, the work will be cylindrical. If longitudinalcontrol is not required, parts 13, 15 may be omitted and nose 12 made rigid with frame 17.
