Abstract

A covulcanizable composition comprises a copolymer derived from a major proportion of a C4 to C8 olefin and a minor proportion of a C4 to C14 multiolefin, a rubber more highly saturated than the copolymer, sulphur and a lead compound containing oxygen. A specified olefin is isobutylene while isoprene, butadiene, dimethyl butadiene, myrcene, piperylene, and allocimene are specified multiolefins. Specified more highly unsaturated rubbers are natural rubber, including reclaimed rubber, butadienestyrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, while lead oxides, lead salicylate, monohydrous tribasic lead maleate, dibasic lead stearate, dibasic lead phthalate, normal lead stearate, tribasic lead sulphate, basic lead silicate sulphate and dibasic lead phosphite are specified lead compounds. The preferred proportion of lead compound is from 3 to 30 per cent. A minor proportion of zinc oxide as well as vulcanization accelerators such as tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and tellurium diethyl dithio-carbamate may also be present in the composition, which may be vulcanized at elevated temperature.ALSO:A vulcanizable composition comprises butyl rubber, natural rubber, sulphur, and a lead compound containing oxygen. Specified lead compounds are lead oxides, lead salicylate, maleate, stearate, phthalate, sulphate, silicate-sulphate and phosphite. It is preferred that the proportion of lead compound as from 3 to 30 per cent. A minor proportion of zinc oxide may be present as well as accelerators such as tetra methyl thiuram disulphide and tellurium diethyl dithio-carbamate. The composition may be vulcanized at elevated temperature.
