Abstract

794,505. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. HOBSON Ltd., H. M., and WESTBURY, R. Nov. 11, 1955 [Dec. 15, 1954], No. 36352/54. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft control system in which the pilot's control member is coupled to the input member of a servomotor actuating a control surface, comprises a device for imposing on the input member a feel force proportional to the velocity of displacement of the control surface and to a function of airspeed which increases with airspeed. In Fig. 3 the surface is actuated by an hydraulic jack of which the piston-rod 16 is anchored at 17, and the cylinder 15 is linked to the control surface by a link 21. A bracket in the jack pivots a bell-crank lever 22, one arm being connected to the pilot's control member (not shown) by a link 11, and to the control valve 18, and the other arm to the piston-rod 25 of a piston 26 in a cylinder 27 pivoted to the jack. The valve 18 co-operates with fluid pressure inlets 19 and an exhaust port 20. The piston 26 is subjected to a control pressure derived from a unit (not shown) as described in Specifications 734,437 or 740,510, [Group XXXIII]. This pressure is caused to increase or decrease with airspeed, and the relationship may be modified above a given airspeed or Mach number. When the pilot displaces the control member, the valve 18 is displaced relatively to the jack body, and is subjected to a centring force from piston 26. This force is proportional to the pressure in cylinder 27, and also to the displacement of the bell-crank lever, i.e. the displacement of valve 18. From the characteristics of the servomotor, the velocity of the control surface is proportional to the displacement of valve 18, whence the centering force is proportional to the velocity of the control surface. A bob weight may be connected to act on the pilot's control member, being responsive to normal acceleration in the case of elevator control, and to acceleration in roll in the case of ailerons.
