Abstract
794,145. Glass manufacture. LIBBEYOWENS-FORD GLASS CO. March 20, 1956 No. 8596/56. Class 56. To establish pressure equilibrium between the internal and external areas of a multiple sheet glazing unit for differing external pressures, the spaced sheets 11, 12 are hermetically sealed to enclose an insulating medium in the space 15 between at a pressure equal to that externally at the place of manufacture, the space 15 is then vented to the atmosphere at the place of different pressure, such as at a higher altitude, and the vent then sealed. The sheets 11, 12 are held in spaced relation by strips 13 of lead or other suitable metal joined to metallic coatings on the sheets 11, 12 by solder 14. The air space 15 is dehydrated in any known manner, as through a hole in the strip 13, subsequently sealed. At the place of installation or use of the unit, an opening 17 is drilled or punched in the strip 13 to have a diameter to correspond with that of a selfthreading screw 19. The air in space 15 is vented to that of the external atmosphere and the screw 19 forced into the opening 17 till the head 20 abuts the strip 13. A drop of solder 21 is then applied.
