Abstract

794,113. Stud and socket fastenings. MODREY, H. J. March 22, 1955 [March 22, 1954], No. 8339/55. Addition to 694,401. Class 44 [Also in Groups XVII, XXXII and XXXVI] A fastener adapted to be secured in an opening in a supporting member 26 comprises a deformable and resilient sleeve 17 mounted on a stud 12 between two lateral projections 13, 14 on the stud, a cam member 15 on the stud between the sleeve and a first 14 of the projections and having a cam surface on the side distant from the sleeve, the first projection contacting the cam surface so that the second of the projections can be axially displaced with respect to the cam member by rotation of the stud, a friction washer 18 between the sleeve and the second projection projecting laterally beyond the periphery of the sleeve, the second projection being capable of rotation relative to the friction washer, the arrangement being such that with the first projection in contact with a part of the cam surface nearest the sleeve, the sleeve is slightly compressed and bulged and in this condition is insertable in the opening with the friction washer bearing against the surface of the supporting member nearest the opening, the compression being increased for locking the fastener by moving the first projection from the part of the cam surface nearest the sleeve to a part further therefrom. As shown the projection 13 is a knurled and slotted head on the stud and the projection 14 is a pin which projects on both sides of the stud through an aperture in the stud. The pin has a central notch to position it in the aperture and the base of the notch is curved so that the pin can rock slightly in the aperture. The friction washer is a separate member and prevents rotation of the sleeve relative to the opening in the member 26. Rotation of the cam member 15 is also prevented by its engagement with the under surface of the sleeve since the distance between the head and pin is such that when the fastener is in a condition so that it can be inserted through the opening the sleeve is slightly compressed. The cam member has notches at the ends of the cam surfaces to retain the pin in the position in which the sleeve is bulged to secure the fastener to the supporting member 26. Rotation of the stud relative to the friction washer is facilitated by an anti-friction washer 19 between the friction washer and the head. In a modification the friction washer is made integral with the sleeve, The anti-friction washer can also be eliminated by treating the upper surface of the washer 18 to give it anti-friction properties. The stud can be used for making electrical connections as shown by providing one end with a cross hole and a set screw 28. A wire 27 is then clamped in the cross hole by the screw 28 and a wiring lug 30 connected to a wire 29 is positioned between the head and the anti-friction washer 19. In a modification the end of the stud remote from the head can be made as a banana plug. The fastener can also be used for closing an opening or for securing together two or more members by positioning the members on the sleeve and to give optimum compression of the sleeve for members of varying thickness non-compressible spacers can be positioned on the stud between the sleeve and the friction washer 18. In a modification instead of using a stud of the type illustrated a stud similar to a cotter pin can be used, the eye forming the head and the ends being bent over to perform the function of the pin 14. The bore of the sleeve can either be cylindrical or constricted, the latter form resulting in a higher pressure grip.
