Abstract

Modification of the process of the parent Specification in which a finely divided catalyst in a fluidized bed is employed instead of a fixed bed catalyst. According to said Specification, in the production of synthesis gas by the partial catalytic oxidation of a gaseous hydrocarbon, steam is added to oxygen-containing gas before admixing with hydrocarbon gas in an amount such that local flame reaction initiated at the point where the gases meet is carried away from the mixing apparatus. The hydrocarbon gas may contain steam in which case the volume ratio of steam to oxygen-containing gas is greater in the oxygen-containing gas than in the hydrocarbon-containing gas. The catalyst may be magnesite containing 3 per cent of nickel. Coke oven gas containing 30 per cent of methane may be reacted with oxygen at 950 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure. Both gases may be saturated with steam at 70 DEG C. and an additional amount added to the oxygen in an amount equal to that of the oxygen. The apparatus of the aforementioned Specification may be employed in an inverted position.
