Classes 7(3) and 7(6) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXI] A throttle valve 2 is actuated by a spring- loaded cable 4 connected to the throttle lever 6 at 14 and passing over one or morelevers 8 freely pivoted on the valve spindle 3 but in one-way connection with the valve in the opening direction through arm 3a, whereby on depression of the pedal, the lever 8 moves towards a stop 9. producing a smaller rate of opening of the throttle valve 2 than when the lever abuts the stop 9 and the valve is actuated by the direct pull of the cable acting on the arm 6. Where the engine is provided with an automatic electrically controlled clutch actuated from the throttle mechanism, the cable 4 is connected to the movable finger 11 of a rheostat so that the finger moves from one contact 12 of the rheostat to another 13 at the same time as the lever 8 abuts the stop 9. In Fig. 3 the cable 4 passes over three levers 8a, 8b, 8c which move up to stops 9a, 9b, 9c in turn, providing a gradual variation in the rate of movement of the throttle valve, the cable being attached at 14 to a drum on the throttle spindle 3. As applied to a carburetter, Fig. 8, the lever 8 is freely pivoted on the throttle spindle 3 and projects through a slot 15 in a drum 6, fixed to the throttle spindle, to which the cable is attached at 14. When the pedal is depressed the lever 8 first moves towards abutment 9 and rotates the throttle valve by contact with the edge of slot 15. When the lever 8 is held stationary by abutment 9, the throttle valve is rotated at an increased rate by the direct pull of the cable on drum 6. In a modification the drum 6 is replaced by an eccentric.
