Abstract

The softening-point of a resin prepared by Friedel-Crafts polymerization of a steamcracked petroleum fraction containing 10 to 35 per cent diolefins, 30 to 65 per cent olefins and 0 to 60 per cent aromatics, paraffins and naphthenes, e.g. a gas oil fraction, is raised by reaction with maleic anhydride followed by cross-linking at a temperature of 125 DEG to 250 DEG C. with a polyhydric alcohol, an amino alcohol, an aminophenol, a hydrazine or a thioglycol. Specified compounds are ethylene and propylene glycols, glycerine, 2-(hydroxymethyl) propanediol - 1,3; ethanolamine, triethanolamine; diamide, methyl and ethyl hydrazines; monothioglycol and thiodiglycol. Oxygen is preferably excluded. The original resin, which is a non-aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbon resin, may be produced using catalysts such as aluminium chloride or bromide, boron trifluoride and solutions, slurries or complexes thereof, residual catalyst being quenched and purification effected by addition of methyl alcohol, water or caustic alkali, followed by vacuum and/or steam distillation. The reaction with maleic anhydride is effected at a temperature above 130 DEG C., optionally using a catalyst such as t.-butyl hydroperoxide or di-t-butyl peroxide. The products, which are suitable for use in floor tiles, may be subjected to oxidation, polymerization, esterification, and acetal and ketal formation.
