Abstract

792,868. Fluid-actuated valves. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO., Ltd. Oct. 19, 1955 [Jan. 28, 1955], No. 2568/55. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXII] A double-acting valve assembly for hydraulic shock absorbers comprises a pair of spaced passages 6, 7 leading into a valve chamber 3 on opposed sides of a fixed valve seating 8a, a sheath member 10 mounted in the valve chamber and externally shaped to permit flow of fluid from one of the passages to the seating, a valve member 11 slidably mounted within the sheath member and movable away from its seating by resilient mechanical pressure on the occurrence of a predetermined excess of fluid pressure on either side of the valve seating and means associated with the valve member to provide an adjustable leakage path through the valve member. The valve seating 8a is formed a member 8 screwed into the chamber 3 and provided with a sealing ring 9 and an annular channel 8e open to the passage 7 and through radial passages 8f to a chamber 8b. The valve member 11 has a cylindrical portion slidable in the sheath member 10 and a conical portion co-operating with the seating 8a. The conical portion 11a has a bore 11c opening into the chamber 8b and also connected to radial bores 11d. The smaller end of a tapered peg 12 integral with an adjusting screw 12b cooperates with the bore 11c to limit the leakage path through the valve member. This path is not completely closed when the peg contacts the end wall 11e of the bore 11c. The sheath member 10 is provided with cut-away parts 10b, 10c to connect the passage 6 to the valve seating and is guided by the residual part 10d. The member 10 is screwed into the chamber 3 and has a chamber 10e housing a valve loading spring 16. The spring abuts one or more washers 17 arranged on a projection 18a on a screw plug 18. In place of the washers 17 and the projection, a separate adjusting screw plug may be provided. The spring chamber 10e is open to the oil reservoir at the ends of pistons chambers 4, 5 remote from the passages 6, 7 through passages 10g, 19.
