[Also in Groups XI, XXXVI and XXXVII] An electric iron has temperature regulating means (see Group VIII) and all electrical connections except the terminals of the heating elements mounted on the inner face of a plate 15 of electrically-insulating, heat-resisting material fitted at the rear end of the casing 11 and handle 12 in such a way as to enclose and seal in a fluid-tight manner a cavity 14 which is in direct communication with the inner surface of the sole plate 1. Two insulated coiled wireheating elements (see Group XI) are removably mounted in grooves (as 2) in the sole plate 1, and these elements can be connected in series or in parallel by means of a suitable connecting plug 20 (see Group XXXVI). The casing 11 and handle 12 may be made in one piece of synthetic resin material and are secured together with a body 13 of refractory material to a bronze sole plate 1 by means of a single screw 45. A circular nut 46 which is tightened by means of a forked member engaging in holes 47, 48, bears on a disc 49 of asbestos or the like. The temperature regulating means comprises a contact-carrying plate 32 which is normally urged towards a silver plate 32 by a spring 34. This spring is connected to a bimetallic strip 35 to open the circuit with a snap action. Adjustment of the switch is effected by a hand wheel 37 mounted on a screw carrying the disc 24.
