Abstract
A coating and polishing composition consists essentially of, by weight, (1) from 3 to 85 parts of a liquid linear organopolypiloxane having a viscosity of from 50 to 1000 cp. at 25 DEG C.; (2) from 0.5 to 30 parts of a liquid linear organopolysiloxane having a viscosity of from 5,000 to 100,000 cp. at 25 DEG C.; and (3) from 0.25 to 20 parts of an organopolysiloxane resin incompatible with the liquid siloxanes and containing an average of from 1.1 to 1.8 silicon-bonded hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom, constituent (1) being in excess of constituents (2) and (3) together. Siloxane (1) is a triorganosilyl end blocked diorganopolysiloxane in which the organic radicals are, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, benzyl, chlorophenyl or trichlorophenyl; siloxane (2) is similar in structure, and siloxane (3) may have methyl, ethyl, vinyl or phenyl radicals or mixtures of these radicals. The compositions may be in the form of aqueous emulsions or solutions in organic solvents, e.g. naphtha, mineral spirits, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, ethylhexyl ether and methylethyl ketone, and may also contain conventional additives such as waxes, e.g. paraffin (microcrystalline and oxidized paraffins), montan, ozokerite, carnauba, candellila, ouricury, palm, bees and whale waxes; mild abrasives, e.g. diatomaceous earth, amorphous silica, tripoli and talc; and combined emulsifying and bodying agents, e.g. gum tragacanth, gum arabic, bentonite, locust bean gum, starch, albumen, karaya gum, Irish moss and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Conventional emulsifying agents are also specified. Useful compositions have the formulation (in parts by weight) : 20 to 60 parts of siloxane (1), 2.5 to 20 parts of siloxane (2), 2 to 20 parts of siloxane (3), 100 to 900 parts of a hydrocarbon solvent, 0 to 1000 parts of water and 15 to 75 parts of a wax. Examples are given.
