Abstract

792,589. Coating with metals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 18, 1956, No. 15597/56. Class 82(2) [Also in Group XXII] A method of making a seamless tube of molybdenum, chromium, silicon, boron, tungsten, or rhenium comprises vapour depositing the metal from vapours of its halides on an elongated support and then selectively dissolving the support. As shown, applied to the formation of a molybdenum pipe, an evacuated chamber 1 heated by a resistance furnace 9 has electrodes 4 and 5 to which are attached tubular stainless steel supports 6, 7, electrically connected at their free ends. At the bottom of the chamber 1 is a mass 16 of fragments of molybdenum through which is passed chlorine gas from a supply of solid chlorine 15 in a tube 12 immersed in liquid nitrogen. The mass of molybdenum may be heated to 450‹C. and the supports to 1100‹C. Molybdenum is deposited on the stainless steel supports and when the desired thickness is obtained the supports are removed and the stainless steel dissolved in boiling sulphuric acid, leaving a tube of molybdenum. The supports may be of iron, nickel or tungsten and the chlorine may be supplied from a wellthrottled cylinder of the gas. Since the current must be increased to maintain a constant temperature of the support, the thickness of the deposited tube may be determined by measuring the voltage drop over the support, an example of the calculation being given.
