Abstract

Artificial thread is produced by the viscose process by spinning viscose having incorporated therein a non-ionic water-soluble block copolymer of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide having a central polypropylene oxide chain containing 26-31, particularly 28, polypropenoxy units substituted at both ends by polyethylene oxide chains each having 6-106, particularly 16, ethenoxy units. The block copolymer may be added to dried high alphacellulose wood pulp which is then steeped in aqueous caustic soda solution of mercerizing strength in order to produce alkali cellulose to be used in the preparation of the viscose. The reactivity of the wood pulp is thereby improved and tyre cord manufactured from viscose produced from the wood pulp has improved fatigue life, brightness and colour. In addition, spinneret "cratering" is suppressed and the filterability of the viscose is improved. Specification 735,481 is referred to.
