Apparatus for lubricating cables comprises a rotary member adapted for the passage therethrough of a cable and provided with packing forming the ends of a chamber to which lubricant is supplied under pressure, the rotary member being rotated as the cable is drawn therethrough, by means of a driving member formed with circumferentially-disposed elongated teeth-like members each of which engages a side of the cable. In the construction shown, a rotor consisting of two half-sections 11 is mounted within a stator 14 and a flanged cover 15, the stator consisting of two half-sections connected at one side by a hinge-pin 19 and being provided with a pivotally-mounted locking device 20 at the other side. One end of the rotor carries a driving member comprising cable-engaging devices 35, each device being formed with an elongated tooth 35a for engagement with one side only of a length of cable 36. The tooth is shaped to conform to the contour of the cable. The cable-engaging devices 35 are fitted within radial guides and are urged inwardly by adjustable springs, the inward movement being limited by adjustable tappets. Each device 35 has connected thereto a radial plate, the inner end of which conforms in shape to the wires or strands of the cable, so that the plates remove extraneous matter from the cable before it is lubricated. The rotor 11 is formed with openings 12 forming part of a chamber for lubricant which is supplied by a pump through a port 17 in the stator 14. The rotor on each side of the chamber is provided with recesses 45 containing rubber or like liners 46. Segmental packing-rings 47 bear on each liner and are compressed between segmental metal rings 48. When a cable is drawn through the apparatus the driving devices 35 co-operate with the strands of the cable and impart a rotary movement to the rotor and to the packing, while lubricant is pumped through inlet 17 into the cable. The locking device 20 on the stator 14 is adapted to retain the two sections of the rotor 11 each within its associated stator half-section when the stator is opened. For this purpose two plungers 24, 28 are provided which enter holes in the rotor sections when the locking device 20 is turned about its pivot, the plunger 24 being actuated by means of a cam slot 22 engaging the plunger pivot 23, and the plunger 28 being actuated by means which include a rack on the plunger, a pinion-wheel 27 and an arcuate rack 26.
