Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises a mixture of esters, the mixture including at least one ester derived from azelaic acid and at least one ester derived, not from azelaic acid, but from some other dicarboxylic acid. The choice of esters is limited to those of formula R2OOCR1COOR21, R2OOCR1COOR4OOCR3, R3COOR4OOCR31, R2(OOCR1COOR4)nOO CR11COOR21 or R3COOR4(OOCR1COOR41)n OOCR31, wherein R1 and R11 are the residues of dicarboxylic acids HOOCR1COOH, R2 and R21 are the residues of monohydric alcohols R2OH, R3 and R31 are the residues of monocarboxylic acids R3COOH, R4 and R41 are the residues of glycols HOR4OH, and n has a value from 1 to 6 which need not be an integer. The monohydric alcohol R2OH may be an ether or thio-ether alcohol, while the glycol HOR4OH may be a polyglycol. The azelaic acid esters may be complex esters derived from C8 or C9 oxo alcohol or 2-ethyl hexanol, azelaic acid and polyglycol 200 (a commercial tetra-ethylene glycol), or diesters formed between azelaic acid and C8 or C9 oxo alcohol or 2-ethyl hexanol. The lubricating oil composition may also contain antioxidants (e.g. phenothiazine), E.P. additives and rust inhibitors (e.g. lanoline or lecithin). In the examples, compositions are described consisting of a complex ester (derived from 2-ethyl hexanol, azelaic acid and polyglycol 200) together with either dinonyl sebacate or another complex ester (derived from 2-ethyl hexanol, sebacic acid and polyglycol 200) or both. For comparison purposes, a composition consisting of dinonyl sebacate and the complex sebacate ester is described. Specifications 666,697, 687,346, 757,023 and 763,611 are referred to.
