Abstract

789,189. Portable grinding tools. DUSS, F. Oct. 14, 1955 [Oct. 30, 1954; May 26, 1955], No. 29409/55. Class 60. [Also in Group XXXV] A portable tool has a rotary tool-member driven by an electric motor surrounded by a housing through which air is caused to flow, to cool the motor, by a rotary vaned member driven by the motor through speed-increasing gearing, the speed of the vaned member being at least equal to that of the tool-member. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a housing 1 surrounds an electric motor M, which drives through speed-increasing bevel gearing 12, 13 a flexible grinding disc 7 of perlon or nylon incorporating or coated with abrasive particles. A fan 6 mounted on the grinding disc spindle draws air through the hollow rotor shaft 9 of the motor and also through the annular space 28 around the motor ; a shield 5 associated with the grinding disc causes the air to flow around the grinding disc and on to the workpiece. In a modification, Fig. 3, air is drawn around the outside of the motor by a fan 6 driven by the motor through speed-increasing gearing 15, 16. The grinding disc 7 is driven through speed-increasing bevel gearing 12, 13 or it may be driven directly by the motor. The fan may be constructed and positioned so as to force air into the motor housing instead of exhausting it therefrom.
