Abstract

789,069. Diaphragms; electrostatic instruments. SCHAAF. A. March 25, 1954, No. 8814/54. Class 40 (4). In an electrostatic loud-speaker; or microphone, the diaphragm consists of an elongated strip having a profile of arcuate shape when viewed along the direction of its width, and the width of the diaphragm is equal to or less than the wavelength in air at normal temperature and pressure of the highest audio-frequency to be radiated, or utilized, respectively. If the sound is required to be radiated from the loudspeaker, or received by the microphone, uniformly to, or from, different directions, the curvature of the diaphragm is made uniform, the profile becoming a circular arc or a complete circle; whereas for non-uniformity the profile is not a circular arc but a parabolic arc as shown in Fig. 3, in which the arrows represent relative sound levels produced by a loudspeaker. These sound levels may be further altered by varying the width of the strip as illustrated in Fig. 4, so that in the result the sounds reaching listeners 12 (Fig. 3), are all at substantially equal levels. Similar directional characteristics are obtained from a microphone having a diaphragm as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The microphone may, in known manner, have part of the diaphragm arranged to operate as a pressure receiver and the other part to operate as a pressure-gradient receiver.
