Class 44 In a separable fastener in which by means of a slider, closing parts of the fastener are engageable or disengageable from one anohter and in which each of the closing parts have engaging elements arranged in spaced relationship along a runner and consists of a stringer as well as a base. the base is made of filiform strands and is attached to the stringer by at least one of its strands. As shown in Fig. 1, each stringer 11 consists of a coil type element and a backing member 17 which is attached to the loops 13 of the coil by flexible filaments 18. The attaching operation is performed by a known form of winding machine. The stringers are interengaged and secured to their respective tapes 10 by stitching 19. A bottom end stop is formed by stitching together at least two of the end coils of the fastener. A top stop is provided by short lengths of coil 26 which are interengaged with the respective fastener coils 13 and secured by stitching. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) an additional bead or cord is secured in overlying relation along each of the backing members in order to more nearly fill the slider and prevent looseness in operation thereof. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5, the backing member is replaced by a plurality of strands 31, 32, 33, 34 twisted together, each one of the strands in succession engaging a loop 13 of the coil element. A bead 35 may be stitched over the strands. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) each strand engages every fourth loop of the coil element. In other arrangements Figs. 7, 7a (not shown) the coil is attached to crocheted and knitted strands respectively, the strands engaging successive pairs of loops of the coil.
