Abstract

788,731. Vehicle power steering. BURMAN & SONS, Ltd., and BRIGGS, W. H. Dec. 8, 1955 [Dec. 22, 1954], No. 37006/54. Class 79(5) In a vehicle hydraulic power steering mechanism an oscillatory vane c extending across a working chamber a is secured to a spindle d carrying a drop arm e, and a spindle h operable by the driver extends through the vane c and carries by screw threads an inner part g of a control valve, the outer part f of which is angularly movable in a cylindrical bore in the vane c. As shown the chamber a is formed in a housing b housing a bearing i for the spindle h to permit limited universal movement thereof, the spindle h being connected to a manually operable spindle (not shown). The inner valve member or nut g is housed with annular clearance in the member f which is mounted on trunnions j in the vane c. The member f is formed with bores o, p communicating with the annular space between the nut g and member f, the bore o being connected by an annular groove q in the vane with a bore t in the spindle d, and the bore p being connected by an annular groove r in a ring s holding the member f in position. The bore t is connected by an inlet u to the output of a pump (not shown) and the groove r is connected by passages v, w to a sump or pump intake. The member f has bores k, m connecting opposite parts of the chamber a with the annular space between the nut g and member f. In operation with the parts in their Fig. 2 position liquid is circulated from the inlet u to the passage w. Rotation of the spindle h by the vehicle driver causes limited rotation of the nut g relative to the member f and limited by a spring urged detent x so that projections n on the nut q co-operate with the bores o, p to cause the annular space to be divided into two liquid paths whereby one side of the chamber a is connected to the pump output and the other side exhausted to move the vane and hence the drop arm e such rotation of the nut q being limited by a spring urged detent x. In the event of pump failure the vane can be operated by the spindle h.
