Classes 79(2) and 79(5) [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] In a wheel suspension for a motor vehicle the wheel is guided exclusively by two superposed links of which one, serving also as a driving and/or braking shaft. is arranged approximately on the axis of rotation of the wheel, while the other serving to take up thrust forces acting on the wheel, is arranged under the first mentioned link. As shown, a stub-axle 33 of a non-driven steerable wheel 10 is carried on the upper part 14 of a carrier 15 the lower forked ends 16 and 17 of which are connected to a joint 19 by means of a steering pivot 18. The joint 19 includes a pivot 20 for hollow guide link 21 the inner-forked end of which is pivotally connected to lateral arms 24 of an axle carrier 25 which is rigidly or yieldably connected to the vehicle structure. The stub-axle 33 is connected through universal joints 37 and 40 and a shaft 39 with a brake drum 28, the hub 27 of which is rotatably mounted on the axle carrier 25 which also carries brake shoes 29. The brake drum is provided with cooling vanes 30 supplying air to cooling ducts 31 for the shoes 29, the air being exhausted through radial ducts 32. The wheel may be sprung by torsion springs arranged in the joint 23 or by coil springs on one or both sides of shaft 39 and abutting the link 21 and a suitable bearing bracket on the carrier 25 or on the frame or body of the vehicle.
