788,217. Tubular heat exchangers. BATEY, A. April 24, 1956 [May 4, 1955], No. 12555/56. Class 64(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] An economizer or steam generator tube element is provided with axially spaced gills 15 and with two opposed pairs of spaced longitudinal walls 17, 19 respectively, extending from the tube, the outer ends of one pair of walls (e.g. the walls 19) being more widely spaced apart than are the outer ends of the other pair. In the form shown a plurality of such elements are arranged one above the other and the extremities of the walls 17 of one element nest within the extremities of the walls 19 of an adjacent element (Fig. 3). Each cavity thus formed between the walls of the nested elements is arranged to receive a soot blower steam diffusion tube 37 (see Group XXVIII). The tube assembly is contained within a rectangular gas duct two opposite walls of which receive the ends of the tubes. The gills 15 are so positioned in relation to the tube ends that on assembly, the gills 15 of adjacent elements are relatively staggered. Each tubular element comprises a plurality of finned sleeves mounted on a plain tube. Preformed finned sleeves may be secured to the tubes through an intervening layer of metal such as aluminium or the sleeves may be cast directly on to the tubes.
