Abstract

788,113. Machine-tool details. TIETZ, R., and TIETZ, H. E. March 28,1955, No. 8953/55. Class 83 (3). An attachment for an automatic lathe &c. comprises a number of work-turrets 13, 14, each having at least three workholders 24-26 and being indexable to carry the workpieces 7 between tool-stations, the workpieces being transferred singly from one turret to the next for further machining operations and gripped in the succeeding turret by the end exposed in the preceding turret. The device is attached to the headstock frame 1, Fig. 1, of an automatic lathe, and the turrets, which are interconnected by gears 19, are indexed by a Maltese-cross mechanism from the control shaft of the lathe. After preliminary machining with radially arranged tools on the headstock 5 and an axial drill 8, the rotating work 7 in the hollow spindle 3 is gripped by an arm 9 before being severed from the bar-stock 4 by a tool 6. The work is then transferred to the workholder 24 in the turret 13, which is indexed to position the work adjacent a drill unit 35. After drilling, the turret is again indexed to transfer the work to the turret 14. In the transferring position, occupied by workholders 26, 28 in Fig. 1, preferably the delivering workbolder is advanced automatically towards the receiving workholder and withdrawn when the receiver has gripped the drilled end of the work. Further indexing carries the work to a drilling unit 37 on a slide 39 which is traversed after the drilling operation to engage the work with a milling cutter also on the slide. A further drilling operation is effected by a drilling unit 36 at the next tool station, and the work is ejected at the following station. Alternatively, an additional machining operation may be performed with the work in the position occupied by toolholder 29 in Fig. 1, and the work ejected just before the workholder again reaches the loading position. The tools are rotated, and may also be fed, by oil under pressure, or the workholders may be fed in dovetailed guides 20-23 in the turrets. More than four workholders may be provided on the turrets and extra turrets used if still more machining stations are required. One of the drilling units may be inclined to the base plate 17 of the machine. In the construction of Fig. 2, the attachment, which may be mounted on a lathe, has its own driving motor for indexing the work-turrets 43, 52, 53, through shaft 42, and operating a member 51 for feeding the work 49 from a magazine 50. Three or six workholders 45-47, in dove-tailed guides 44, may be provided in each turret.
