Abstract

787,902. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. STANDARD APPARATE FABRIK GES. Sept. 6, 1954, No. 25747/54. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic tape record apparatus the tracks on the tape are closely spaced, for example 2 per m/m., each trace consisting of a part parallel with the edge of the tape, and a second part connecting the next trace and arranged at a defined angle therewith, a drive roller being provided having guide rings for accurately locating the tape, and the transducer being provided with layers, foils or shaped pieces of diamagnetic or ferromagnetic materials. The embodiment described with reference to Fig. 2 shows an endless coil 10 of tape supported on a driving plate 11, and a driving roller 9 having conical guides 12 of a hard material such as agate, hard glass or chromium. The transducer 20 traverses the width of the tape by means of a lead screw 19 which is normally stationary until a notch 6 in the tape operates a switch which causes a pawl 16 to be withdrawn from engagement with a pin 17 on a disc 18 solid with lead screw 19 and driven by a friction clutch 21. A counter 23 geared to lead screw 19 indicates the particular track being recorded or reproduced, while a knob 24 enables a particular track to be selected, a disc 26 coupled thereto serving to disengage the pawl 16 from the pin 17. Means are described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown) whereby the direction of rotation of the lead screw may be automatically reversed at the end of the traverse of the transducer 20.
