Abstract

787,872. Batteries. PRITCHETT & GOLD & E.P.S. CO., Ltd. Aug. 9, 1956 [Sept. 23, 1955], No. 27162/55. Class 53. During manufacture of a primary or secondary battery having an inert powder filling throughout the electrolyte space, the plates are held firmly in spaced relationship in the battery container and the powder is consolidated by rapidly lifting and lowering the container, with rapid deceleration during the lifting movement. Fig. 1 shows a battery container a held in a jig d mounted on a rising and falling plate e. The battery plate lugs g are held by clamps f attached to the jig. The inert powder, e.g. diatomaceous earth, is held in a hopper h which is loosely attached to the jig so that an intermittent stream of powder discharges into the container as it rises and falls. When the container is filled a weight i is placed on the powder and the container is further vibrated. Ribbed microporous separators as described in Specification 783,729 may be provided between the plates, the spaces between the fine ribs of the separators then being free of powder. The tops of the separators may be turned over to ensure this.
