The paper sheet counting apparatus described in Specifications 769,065 and 775,419 is provided with an electric circuit, Fig. 1, arranged so as to prevent rotation of the rotary disc until a predetermined degree of suction obtains in the suction line. When the starting switch 36 is operated a circuit is completed to energize the suction pump motor 32 and when the predetermined degree of suction is obtained switch 34 closes to establish a holding circuit for pump motor 32, whereafter release of starting switch 36 completes a circuit to energize a motor 33 for driving the rotary disc. An electromagnetically operated valve 45, Fig. 2, associated with solenoids 35, 35a, is adapted to close an opening 46 in the suction line 42 on completion of the circuit by depression of the starting switch 36, which valve remains closed on release of the starting switch by means of a circuit through the suction operable switch 34, and opens only if the suction in the system falls below the predetermined value. The sheets are held on edge in a stack 59 by a clamp 48, 49, Figs. 3, 5, carried by arms 50, 51 separable against the action of a spring 55, so that the end of the stack of sheets abuts against a suction head when the latter is in a correct position for operating upon the stack. The circuitincludes a further switch 38 operated by movement of the sheet clamp to reverse the disc motor so that a suction head comes to rest in such a position that when a stack of sheets is inserted between the clamping means, a suction orifice is in contact with the first sheet in the stack before the starting switch is operated.
