787,572. Generating combustion products under pressure. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1955], No. 2381/55. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XXVI] In an apparatus for producing a supply of working fluid for the operation of a prime mover 12 by decomposition of a mono-fuel, a conduit 11 leads from a breech 10, in which a charge of deflagrant such as cordite may be fired, to the prime mover. The conduit is provided near the breech with an inlet 13 for the supply of mono-fuel thereto, combustion of the mono-fuel being initially caused by the hot combustion products produced by firing the cordite in the breech. Mono-fuel is supplied from a tank 14 to the space below the piston 19 of the pressure intensifier 17, the space above the piston 19 being connected by a pipe 21 to the conduit 11. The fuel flows from the intensifier 17 through the supply pipe 18 to the mono-fuel inlet 13 on the conduit 11. The conduit 11 thus acts as a mono-fuel reaction chamber. The prime mover 12 may be a turbine which is used for starting a gas turbine or other internal-combustion engine and the invention is particularly applicable when the breech 10 has to be located at some distance from the prime mover 12. The intensifier 17 may contain sufficient mono-fuel to provide one start; a fuel pump may be used instead of the intensifier 17. Specifications 784,121 and 787,571 are referred to.
