Abstract

787,480. Coated fabrics. ILFORD, Ltd. May 16, 1956 [June 13, 1955; Nov. 11, 1955], Nos. 17019/55 and 32348/55. Class 140. [Also in Group XX] An oriented polystyrene sheet is coated with a first coating of polyalkyl acrylate, polyalkyl methacrylate or copolymers of alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates with themselves or each other or of either with methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate, 4-vinyl pyridine or acrylonitrile, the alkyl groups containing not more than 5 carbon atoms and the polymers or copolymers having an acid value not exceeding 120, followed by a second coating of cellulose nitrate and a third coating of gelatin, or by a second coating of cellulose nitrate mixed with gelatin. The first coating may be polymethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, methyl methacrylate/methyl acrylate copolymer, or methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid copolymer. The polymer or copolymer is applied as a solution in acetone, a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol, ethanol or isopropanol and a high boiling solvent such as cyclohexanone or ethyl lactate. Other ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isopropyl ketone may be included. The cellulose nitrate may be applied to the dried first coating as a solution in methanol with methyl acetate or with butyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone. The gelatin is dispersed in an acid aqueous/alcohol medium such as aqueous methanol/salicylic acid and coated over the dried cellulose nitrate layer. Alternatively, the gelatine coat may contain a minor proportion of cellulose nitrate and the second coat may then be omitted.
