Abstract

In the dyeing of cellulosic textiles with vat dyestuffs by padding the textile with an aqueous dispersion of the oxidized form of the dyestuff, reducing the dyestuff to its leuco form in situ on the textile with an alkaline solution of a reducing agent, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite, and subsequently re-oxidizing the leuco compound, improved results are obtained by effecting the reduction in the presence of anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid or a salt thereof. The anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid may be added to the pigment padding liquor and/or to the reducing liquor or it may be applied to the textile immediately prior to the reduction step. The process is applicable to continuous or discontinuous methods and the molten-metal technique of Specification 620,584 may be employed. Vat dyestuffs of the anthraquinone and related polynuclear quinones, indigoid and thioindigoid series may be used. Numerous examples are given.
