Abstract

787,262. Inking-apparatus. ROTOWERKE AKT.-GES. March 4, 1955 [March 8. 1954], No. 6502/55. Class 100(2) [Also in Groups XVII and XXIX] Ink is supplied to an inking roller in a printing machine, e.g. a multi-drum stencil duplicator, under pressure derived from the vapour pressure of a volatile liquid propellant which vaporizes at normal room temperature; when ink emerges the vapour pressure reduced by the volumetric increase in the space containing the propellant is restored by further vaporization. The propellant 34 (such as propane or butane) and ink 32 may be contained in a cylindrical container 5, either separated as at 25 or mixed together; where separated as shown a small amount of the volatile liquid may be added to viscous ink to assist flow; when not separated, the proportions may be predetermined to ensure that sufficient vapour is developed to expell all the ink; in the latter arrangement, the outlet is at the bottom of the container. The piston 25 shown is of resilient material and its top fits the container top 22 for maximum ink expulsion. It may be replaced either by a simple rubber bladder (35, Fig. 8, not. shown), clamped at its open end by the edge of the cover 22 (or the base 23), or by a flexible rubber tube (36, Fig. 7, not shown), lying against the container sides, which is clamped at one end by the edge of the cover 22 and is turned back inwardly at its closed end 'to form a space for the propellant 34; as the closed end moves upwards similarly to the piston 25, the flexible wall doubles back further. The container 5 is connected to a flexible pipe 12 by a self-sealing coupling device 27 ... 31 (see Group XXIX), or a simpler coupling (Fig. 4, not shown), which is initially sealed but not self sealing (see Group XVII); the pipe 12 leads to a nozzle 10 mounted in a frame 6 pivoted at 7 and spring-loaded downwards at 8; when the frame 6 is manually rocked, the nozzle valve 11, Fig. 6, is opened by a pivoted cam 20 depressed by a fixed plate 19 extending across the machine, whereby ink may flow from the outlet 12a on to the roller 3. The nozzle 10 slides across the machine on guide rods 18 which form the lower side of the rectangular frame 6; a handle 9 similarly slides along the upper side of the frame 6, and is so connected to the nozzle 10 by a cable 16 running over pulleys 17a ... 17f, Fig. 5, that the handle and nozzle perform the same movement; the pipe 12 is taken over pulleys 21 and is kept taut by a spring 13. The left-hand end, Fig. 5, of the frame 6 is detachable to allow the rest of the frame together with the parts supported thereby to be withdrawn and changed in multicolour work.
