Abstract

786.955. Reinforced concrete; stairs; posts. COSTAIN CONCRETE CO., Ltd. June 6, 1955 [March 4, 1954], No. 6356/54. Classes 20(1) and 20(4) In a method of making a pre-tensioned pre-stressed concrete member 1, Fig. 1. a pocket 2 is formed in one or both ends of the member of such a size that its sidewalls encircle or embrace the ends of stressing wires 3 passing through the member 1. the wires 3 being free within the pocket or slightly embedded in the walls thereof, the wires after casting is complete being cut off so that their ends lie within the pocket which is then filled with concrete, cement grout, or bitumen. As shown the pocket 2 tapers towards its base so that the inner ends of the wires. 3 are embedded in the concrete. The wires 3 after being cut off flush with the end face 4 are folded in as at 5, Fig. 2, and bent back upon themselves at 6. In modifications three or more wires are used the cross-section of the pocket having as many sides as there are wires. Alternatively the pocket may be circular in cross-section. As .applied to the treads of a staircase, Fig. 4, a side member 8 has a series of horizontal ledges 9 each formed with a depression 10 to receive a U-shaped stirrup 11 fixed in the tread 12 during casting. Stressing wires 13 dispersed in groups of four, end in' pockets 14 and after casting, and pre-stressing the wires 13 are cut off and the ends bent over into the pockets and the latter filled in. In pre-stressing a post, such as a lamp standard of upwardly tapering lattice formation having apertures therethrough, the wires are arranged in groups along opposite sides, separate pockets being provided for each group at the bottom of the post but only a single pocket at the smaller upper end thereof. If part of the post is to be buried in the ground the apertures in this part are closed by panels.
