Abstract
786,653. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and KIRK, W. A. March 13, 1956 [March 14, 1955], No. 7416/55. Class 103 (1). In a fluid-pressure braking system for tractortrailer vehicles having service and emergency pipe-lines, a valve device on the tractor vehicle comprises a valve 10 controlling a communication between the tractor reservoir, via port 6, and the emergency pipe line, via port 8, and a second valve 19 controlling communication between the manually operable tractor control valve, via port 15, and the service pipe line, via port 16; both valves 10 and 19 being biased to their closed positions by springs 11 and 20, respectively and to be normally held open by a piston 3, formed with a stem 23, subjected to the tractor reservoir pressure and to the opposing action of a control spring 4 so long as the tractor reservoir pressure exceeds a value determined by the strength of the spring 4. The valves 10 and 11 are automatically closed when the tractor reservoir pressure falls below this value so that the tractor reservoir is not vented to atmosphere should the trailer break away from its tractor.
