786,614. Composite coverings for floors, roofs, &c. STATOFIX TRANSCONTINENTAL CORPORATION SOC. ANON. March 14, 1956 [March 15, 1955; Feb. 1, 1956], No. 8049/56. Class 20(4) A water-tight covering for a structure 1 which is liable to crack, e.g. at 1, comprises an outer film of waterproof and elastic material 2, e.g. of polyvinyl aceto-chloride, which is insulated from the structure 1 by a thin intermediate layer 3, e.g. of polyvinyl acetate, the latter having a lesser degree of longitudinal elasticity than the material 2 so that it can slip when the crack 1 ocurrs and distribute a localized deformation over a zone L of the water-proof layer 2 of greater width than that of the crack 1. If the limit of elasticity of the polyvinyl aceto-chloride is not exceeded the layer 2 will return to its original length, without wrinkling, when the crack l closes. The intermediate layer 3 can be applied either by dusting polyvinyl acetate, or by brushing a solution of polyvinyl acetate, on to the structure 1 and then covering it by a dusting, or a brushing of a layer of polyvinyl aceto - chloride. In a modification a roughened layer of polyethylene is laid by machinery on a plastic intermediate layer of polyvinyl acetate, a protective covering of plastic material, e.g. a solution of plasticized and stabilized vinyl copolymers having approximately the same elasticity as the layer of polyethylene, being applied over the latter. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the intermediate layer consists of Kraft paper 6 which is stuck by its underface 7 to the structure 1, the polyethylene layer 4 being stuck on to the ends of fibres 8 which fill the roughened face of the Kraft paper 6. The core of the Kraft paper will tear over a crack 1 so that a pull will be exerted uniformly over a zone L of the layer 4. In this embodiment the Kraft paper 6 will preferably be stuck to the structure by means of an adhesive of anti-capillary nature in order to prevent rise of water from the structure.
