Abstract

Vinyl and allyl esters of beta,beta-dialkyl acrylic acids are prepared by the following methods: (a) in the case of vinyl esters by reaction of the acid with acetylene, or by transesterification of the acid with a vinyl ester, and (b) in the case of allyl esters by the esterification of the acid with allyl alcohol, by the transesterification of the acid with an allyl ester, or by the reaction of allyl chloride with a metallic salt of the acid. In examples: (1) vinyl beta-beta-dimethylacrylate is prepared by ester interchange between vinyl acetate and beta-beta-dimethylacrylic acid in the presence of mercuric sulphate as a catalyst, the reaction mixture being washed with a solution of sodium bicarbonate before distilling. The product is characterized by means of its density, boiling point and refractive index; (8) allyl beta-beta-dimethylacrylate is prepared by esterifying the acid with allyl alcohol in presence of sulphuric acid and benzene. The product is characterized by means of its density, boiling point and refractive index; (9) vinyl methyl-3-pentene-2-oate is prepared by ester interchange between the acid and vinyl acetate.ALSO:Insoluble, infusible three-dimensional polymers are obtained by polymerizing manomeric material which includes at least one monomer of the formula <FORM:0786381/IV (a)/1> in which R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals and R3 is a group comprising an ethylenic bond of the form CH2=C<, the polymerization being carried out in two stages of temperature: (1) at a temperature less than that which would cause gelification, e.g. 100 DEG C., thus obtaining a fusible soluble linear polymer, and (2) at a higher temperature in order to produce an insoluble, infusible polymer. Monomers specified are vinyl and allyl senecioates, the vinyl ester of methyl-3-pentene-2-oic acid and the N-allyl amide of senecioic acid. These compounds may be copolymerized with other monomers such as vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylic and alpha-substituted acrylic acids and their nitriles, amides and esters, e.g. methyl acrylate and methacrylate and acrylonitrile, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene, maleic anhydride, methyl vinyl and methyl isopropenyl ketones and vinyl alkyl ethers. The first stage of polymerization may be carried out in bulk, in solution in solvents such as benzine, or in aqueous emulsion with the acid of emulsifiers such as sulphonated diheptylsuccinate or a mixture of sodium sulphoricinoleate and a condensation product of ethylene oxide and oleyl alcohol. Catalysts may be employed such as barium and hydrogen peroxides, ammonium and potassium persulphates, benzoyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and azo-diisobutyronitrile and redox systems including reducing agents such as sodium bisulphite and thiosulphate. Also present may be polymerization regulators such as halogenated hydrocarbons and mercaptans. In the second stage of polymerization the polymers, after preliminary processing if desired, are subjected to a higher temperature, e.g. 100-150 DEG C., with the addition, if required, of further quantities of catalyst.
