Abstract

786,164. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Oct. 19, 1955 [Nov. 6, 1954], No. 32174/54. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre having a rubber or like body is reinforced by a cord winding arranged in at least one double layer with the cords of one layer crossing those of the other layer to form a lattice, and the cord in each layer extending in a series of turns progressing continuously around the tyre in the same direction, each turn consisting of two U-shaped loops 4, 7 each passing tangentially from one edge of the tyre, through the sidewalls and crown and tangentially into the other axially-aligned edge, and two intermediate axially-aligned arcuate portions 5, 6 and 8, 9 disposed one around each edge of the tyre and each of sufficient length to cause the edges of the tyre to contract in diameter to grip a wheel rim when the cord is tensioned by inflation of the tyre. The arcuate portions of each turn may subtend an angle with the tyre centre of between 40 and 300 degrees, and each U-shaped loop may be either symmetrical or asymmetrical about the medium plane of the tyre. The cord is firmly embedded in the rubber of the tyre to prevent slippage and may comprise rubber-coated twisted strands of twisted filaments of steel or natural or synthetic textile material.
