Abstract
785,347. Centrifugal separators. VEREINIGTE ALUMINIUM-WERKE AGT.- GES. July 7, 1955 [Aug. 17, 1954] , No. 19724/55. Class 23 [Also in Group XIII] An installation for dehydrating sludge comprises a continuously operated centrifugal separator 5 having a stack of liner plates, a centrifugal separator 9 receiving concentrated sludge from the separator 5 and intermittently discharging sludge by means of a scraper, and drying furnace 14 receiving the sludge from the separator 9. Sludge containing cryolite particles is pumped by a pump 4 from a container 1 to the separator 5, the clear liquid discharged from the separator passing to waste through a pipe 6 and the sludge separated by the separator being pumped by a pump 8 to the separator 9. The sludge discharged from the separator 9 is pumped by a pump 13 for dehydration in the furnace 14 which has concurrent heating at its inlet end and and counterflow heating at its outlet end. Gas and dust from the furnace is separated in a cyclone 19, the separated gas being forced by a blower 18, into which water injected, to a cyclone 20. The wet separate from the cyclone 20 is returned to the container. As shown the separator 9 is a density separator, and the cloudy liquid discharged from this separator is returned to the container 1 whilst the clear liquid is discharged to waste. In a modification, the separator 9 is a strainer separator.
