Abstract

785,189. Electrodeposition. TIARCO CORPORATION. March 20,1956 [March 25, 1955], No. 8743/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. A method of electrodepositing metal, e.g. chromium, from a bath having a poor throwing power on to an object having a multiplanar area, e.g. a twist drill, the toothed edge of a saw or the serrated edge of a gear-wheel, comprises covering the area with a porous, electrically conductive fabric, e.g. wire mesh or perforated metal sheet, and passing current between the object as cathode and an anode. The mesh may be 1/ 16 inch mesh, e.g. of copper or brass, and tightly envelops all sides of the area to be plated. The bath comprises 32 ounces of chromic acid per gallon and 0.32 ounces of sulphate in the form of sulphuric acid per gallon, a temperature of 120‹ to 125‹ F. being maintained and a current density of 3 amps. per square inch. Prior to plating, the object with the covering in position, may be anodically cleaned, rinsed, dipped in muriatic acid and rinsed, and during plating is suspended in the bath equidistantly spaced from a number of anodes.
