Abstract

785,180. Vehicle power steering. WAGNER ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 1, 1956 [March 25, 1955], No. 6445/56. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXIV] A servo unit for operating a power steering valve 7 as well as hydraulic brakes is supplied with pressure fluid by a pump 1 on suction from a reservoir 2. The pump output being applied to the space behind a piston 30 having inlet and outlet ports 32 and 33 therein. Operation of pedal 40 causes through throttling of the passage between ports 32 and 33 a build up of pressure behind piston 30, which moves to transmit a thrust to rod 35 through snap ring 43, and cause pressurization of liquid in chamber C which is transmitted to the wheel brake cylinders 15. A relief by-pass valve 22 prevents excessive pressure behind piston 30. On release of the brakes, the piston 30 and rod 35 are returned by a spring, not shown, in the operating linkage, the valve 50 acted upon by light spring 54 allowing flow from one side to the other of cup washer 46. In the system shown the pump 1 is used to sumpply fluid pressure to a power steering valve 7.
