Abstract
785,096. Non-reciprocal microwave circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954], No. 30161/55. Class 40 (8). A non-reciprocal radio-frequency coupling device comprises a disc-shaped element 10 of ferrite disposed between two flat conductive spirals 5, 6 which are shaped and dimensioned to transform plane-polarized energy in the input and output lines A, B into circularly polarized energy for propagation within the ferrite element. The element 10 is conditioned by an adjustable electromagnet 11, 12 for gyromagnetic resonance at the operating frequency. Since, when viewed in the two opposing directions of propagation, the rotation of the wave is respectively in the same sense and in the opposite sense to that necessary for gyro-resonancelossless propagation takes place in one direction and complete attenuation in the other. The spirals 5, 6 are connected by conductive studs 9, 9a to the ends of narrow strip conductors 2, 2a which together with the comparatively wide ground conductors 1, 1a and the dielectric layers 3, 3a form input and output transmission lines of the " strip " type. The conductors 1, 1a are connected to the housing 4 of the coupling device. In a modification, Fig. 6, the coupler is completely enclosed within a housing 18 connected to the outer conductors 19 of rectangular input and output coaxial lines. The inner conductors are in the form of flat strips 20 centrally supported by spacers (not shown) or by a solid dielectric filling 21. Alternatively the input and output lines may be of the " sandwich " type in which a central strip conductor is disposed between a pair of comparatively wide outer conductors. Printed circuit techniques, using etching processes, may be used in certain cases to form the input and output lines.
