Abstract
The invention comprises metal complexes of amino-acids of the formula: <FORM:0785024/IV (a)/1> or <FORM:0785024/IV (a)/2> where M is a trivalent metal atom (other than cobalt), B is a divalent metal atom which forms a chelate of lower stability than does M, R is the ion from carboxymethyl or b -hydroxyethyl, Y is alkylene or cycloalkylene interposing two or three carbon atoms between the two nitrogen atoms and x is - 4. These are made by forming the trivalent metal chelate of the acid and reacting it with a compound of the divalent metal or vice versa. The pH of the mixture determines which of the above formul represents the complex obtained. Specified salts are the Ca-ferric, Ca-Co, Ca-Al, Ca-manganic, Zn-Al and manganous-ferric salts of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and the Ca-ferric, Zn-ferric and manganous-ferric salts of N-(b -hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine triacetic acid. Y may also be propylene, trimethylene, isobutylene or cyclohexylene and B may also be magnesium, strontium, barium, cadmium, copper, lead, iron, cobalt or nickel.ALSO:Compositions to be added to the soil to correct trace-metal deficiencies comprise a compound of the formula: <FORM:0785024/I/1> or <FORM:0785024/I/2> in a carrier, where M is a trivalent metal atom (other than cobalt), B is a divalent metal atom which forms a chelate of lower stability than does M, R is the ion from carboxymethyl or b -hydroxyethyl, Y is alkylene or cycloalkylene interposing two or three carbon atoms between the two nitrogen atoms and x is -4. Suitable carriers are sand, clay, vermiculite, lime, limestone, compost, fertilizers and resinous materials such as polyacrylonitrile soil conditioners. Specified salts are the Ca-ferric, Ca-Cr, Ca-Al, Ca-manganic, Zn-Al and manganous-ferric salts of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and the Ca-ferric, Zn-ferric and manganous-ferric salts of N-(b -hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine triacetic acid. The divalent metal may also be magnesium, strontium, barium, cadmium, copper, lead, iron, cobalt or nickel.
