Abstract

In the known alkaline treatment processes (defined in the Specification) given to boiler feed waters and boiler waters, the resulting boiler sludges are rendered free-flowing by adding a readily-soluble magnesium compound to the boiler feed water in such amount that the value of the expression: <FORM:0784750/I/1> in which CaO, MgO, SiO2 are respectively the equivalents in moles of the calcium, magnesium and silicon compounds in the boiler feed water, is greater than 4 and preferably greater than 7. The treatment according to the invention may be provided by continuously feeding magnesium sulphate (or nitrate, carbonate or chloride) solution into a boiler feed water vessel, or directly into the boiler, or into the feed water before it enters the boiler, so that in any case precipitation of sludge occurs in the boiler. Alternatively, briquettes of magnesium sulphate may be packed into a by-pass feeder for gradual solution as feed water passes over them. One or more of the following may be present in the feed water or boiler: an antifoaming agent (e.g. selected from polyoxyalkylene glycols, monoethers and diethers of polyoxyalkylene glycols, polyacyl polyamines), a de-oxygenating agent (e.g., sodium sulphite, sodium nitrite, tannins, hydrazine), sodium aluminate. According to the first Provisional Specification the "formula expression" is: <FORM:0784750/I/2> and the alumina content of the feed water may be adjusted by addition of sodium aluminate.
