Abstract
784,688. Applying rubber caps to cartons. BENTON & STONE, Ltd. April 6, 1956 [April 30, 1955], No. 12600/55. Class 125(2). [Also in Group XXXII] A machine for applying caps made of rubber or like extensible materials to cartons or the like, includes a plurality of fingers arranged in annular form and on the tips of which a cap can be placed, a corresponding number of fluid operable plungers for imparting radial motion to the fingers and means for effecting relative axial movement of the container and fingers. The movable capping head comprises a pair of superimposed rings forming a ring k which carries a number of pistons t in cylinders s arranged radially beneath the ring k. Each piston is attached to a rod u at the free end of which is a finger v, integral with which is a guide arm w running in a guide x. The head is carried by a plate d connected to a double acting piston by a rod h, and the whole machine is supported on a base a by two pillars b, brackets y guiding the capping head along the pillars. Air enters the cylinders s through passages m, n in the ring k and through hollow rods j. The containers are placed in holders f on a rotating table e. A lever 7 has a roller 8 at its inner end engaging notches in the circumference of the table e. Hydraulically actuated grippers 2 mounted on the pillars b steady the containers in position beneath the capping head. In use an attendant actuates the lever 7 disengaging the roller 8 from the table e and also causing the grippers 2 to be retracted, the table is turned by hand, the lever released into a notch and the grippers contact a container. A cap is placed on the fingers and a valve admitting air into the cylinders s opened, whereupon the fingers move outwardly causing the cap to expand. Simultaneously the capping head is moved down about the container which forces the cap off the fingers, the cap then snapping onto the container, and finally the capping head moves back into its original position.
